I rarely get the opportunity to attend red carpet events, but my new gig as the official blogger for the Hotel Concorde Berlin put me in the heart of the action at this year’s Deutscher Filmpreis. For my readers outside of Germany, the Deutscher Filmpreis is the German Academy Awards.  It’s an award show that honors many of the best and brightest stars in German film. Winners of the catagories win cash prizes and take home statues called LOLAs.  I attended the award show as the hotel blogger, live tweeting the event from the red carpet, the press lounge during the show and the after-party.

When I was told I would be going to the show, I first thought, “Whoa cool!, I’ll be hanging out with German celebs.” My second thought, “OMG-town what am I going to do with my hair?!?” Then, “What on earth am I going to wear??” and lastly “No forreal, what am I suppose to do with my hair!!!??!!” Luckily I got it all sorted and I ended up looking fabulous, at least that is what my mom said (Thanks, Mom!) as well as quite a few of you on facebook .(Thanks, Guys!)

Here is how I got ready for the red carpet.

What did I wear?:

Being a plus size woman in Europe can be a bit of a downer. I swear German fat women simply aren’t used to the whole not-dressing-up-in-drapes-and-hiding-away-from-public-vision thing.  The plus size clothing here is not only overpriced but for the most part pretty damn ugly. I remember once going into a plus size boutique and trying on a dress, the woman advised me to go up a size because the dress clung to my butt. I looked at her and said, “And that is bad because….” She was utterly speechless, I’m sorry I am not hiding my booty under a bushel! I typed all that to say, I had to go abroad for the dress. I decided that since it was a red carpet event that I should do long and most definitely shiny. I finally chose the Cassandra Infinity Gown by Igigi.

What did I do with my hair?

Well my hair was a bit more challenging because I didnt really have a vision. I just played with it until it looked not totally unfortunate. My locks were finally getting longish and I decided to go for an updo. I started with a rod set and then basketweaved the back. I added two flat twisty kinda things on each side. The curly front was molded together with pins and rubberbands. The whole thing was like Frankestein, but it all worked out in the end. Warning: in the following pictures I am barefaced and braless.

What did I do with my makeup and nails?

For my face I did a simple light lid using neutral tones from Urban Decay. I was inspired by a pin-up look but decided against the red lip. For my nails  I totally experimented with black nail polish and decorative sand I had sitting around the house. I basically painted one layer of black polish, let it dry and then applied a second coat and then sprinked the sand over it while it was still wet. It looked cool but it was very impractical. I can’t tell you how many different things I scratched with the sand. I got many compliments but I had to take off the 3d nail art when I got home, I think it would have been a hazard to sleep with that stuff on. Makeup and nails below:

So how did it all come together:

I think after the hours of primping and prepping my red carpet look really came together. I met a few celebrities, got my hands on a LOLA and partied into the night like a rock star. It totally felt like prom all over again. I didn’t get many photos of myself during the night because I was working but here are the few I was able to snap.

mmm not sure, you know. i know it look less than i expected cause i was done twiddling my thumbs like okay, now what. i would say with hair and makeup, oh and nails, three hours or so. i did the rod set two days earlier, that was pretty time consuming.

Girl you look great! I’ve never commented on your site, but you did amazing. I would have rolled up in there with a bun in my hair and a potato sack dress on. Props on knowing how to complete your own red-carpet look!! Inspires me to learn how to do a few things with my hair, because my hair skills are limited to wrapping and unwrapping, bun and ponytail. Thanks for sharing!
